Information for annotators:

  2. Register for access to the annotation system for the organism(s) you are interested in.
  3. Contact your community coordinator for more information on how to contribute. Contact information for each community coordinator is available on the respective organism page.

If you are a project coordinator, contact us to learn more about the requirements for hosting your organism with the i5k Workspace@NAL. We strive to connect emerging communities with existing resources whenever possible, and are currently focusing on organisms that do not have access to genome database resources.

The i5k initiative plans to sequence the genomes of 5,000 insect and related arthropod species over the next 5 years. This project will be transformative because it aims to sequence the genomes of all insect species known to be important to worldwide agriculture, food safety, medicine, and energy production; all those used as models in biology; the most abundant in world ecosystems; and representatives in every branch of insect phylogeny so as to achieve a deep understanding of arthropod evolution and phylogeny.
The i5k Workspace@NAL provides genome projects resulting from the i5k initiative with a space to display and share genome assemblies and gene models. In particular, the Workspace is geared towards research groups that do not have the resources to display the genome assembly and its features. For these “orphaned” genomes, we provide:

  • A central species website and data repository for each genome project
  • Genome feature visualization (JBrowse)
  • Genome feature manual annotation (Web Apollo)
  • BLAST function to search genome assembly and gene predictions

The portal is designed using GMOD tools, which are open-source and designed specifically to handle and support genomic data.
