Varroa jacobsoni

    Summary
    Type
    organism
    Genus
    Varroa
    Species
    jacobsoni
    Description

The ectoparasitic mite Varroa jacobsoni, of the mite order Mesostigmata, is an obligate parasite of immature and adult bees. V. jacobsoni originated in Asia as a pest of the Asian honey bee (Apis cerana), but has spread almost worldwide. A recent host switch to the domesticated Western honey bee (Apis mellifera) may represent an additional threat to beekeeping. Genomic and transcriptomic data from V. jacobsoni and its sister species Varroa destructor, which also switched hosts, will allow for a comparative approach to understanding the mechanisms underlying host switches.
